Hubbard Music Center in Chaffee Hall
Phase II of the Chaffee Hall renovation of academic spaces is complete and will be in full operation beginning fall 2010.
The transformation and expansion of the Chaffee Hall
gymnasium footprint to house the Hubbard Music Center, named in recognition of the generosity of Robert P. Hubbard ’47 and his lead gift of $5 million, features a 300-seat music performance hall, a large rehearsal space, four new academic classrooms, instrument storage space, and practice rooms.
The creation of the Hubbard Music Center supports the school's robust music programs and creates a dynamic venue for the music programs at Loomis Chaffee for decades to come. The school also purchased 10 new pianos: two Steinway grand pianos, two Steinway-affiliated Boston grand pianos, and six Boston uprights for the music center.
Clark Center for Science & Mathematics
The Clark Center for Science & Mathematics was formally re-dedicated in October 2008. Phase I of the modernized facility opened at the start of the 2008-09 academic year when science students and faculty began to make full use of this state-of-the-art building and its newly designed lab/classrooms.
With the completion of Phase II this year, Loomis Chaffee Science and Mathematics departments came together to teach under one roof for the first time in the school’s history.
In January 2010 members of the Karp/Strogatz family gathered to formally dedicate the Ian A.L. Strogatz ’65 Physics Laboratory in the Clark Center for Science & Mathematics.
Design features of the building include a 3-story open stair acting as a gravity test chamber, new roof monitors focusing sunlight through student prism experiments, and a true pendulum continually circling in a pit of sand.
