Message from the Archivist


The Loomis Chaffee School Archives preserves a rich and vibrant past. Here one can learn of the five siblings whose vision lead to the chartering of the Loomis Institute in 1874. Visitors may explore the stories, traditions and materials gathered during our nearly one hundred years of educating young people to pursue their best selves and the common good.  Special collections document the historically and artistically important careers of prominent sculptor Evelyn Longman and painter Osbert Loomis.

In honor of the recent opening of the Hubbard Center, current and upcoming Archives’ displays explore the history of making music at the Loomis Chaffee School. On view now is “William C. Card: Music Teacher, Composer and Musician” and “12,000 Miles From the NEO: The First American Broadway Musical Performed in China”. THE ARCHIVES HOURS AND LOCATION

The Archives, located on the ground floor of the Katharine Brush Library, is open in accordance with the academic calendar at the following times:


Mondays— 2:30-4
Wednesdays— 9:30-11
Thursday Week I —1:30-4
Thursday Week II — 9:30-12:30
Friday Week I— 8:30-9:30;2-4
Friday Week II— 2-4

Additional hours are happily accommodated upon request.
