Message from the Director

I am delighted that you have chosen to explore Loomis Chaffee and hope that you’ll make a point of visiting our beautiful 300-acre campus in Windsor, Connecticut. Our location places us at the nexus of New England higher education with many of the nation’s finest colleges and universities only a short distance from Hartford, six miles to our south.

As one of America’s leading boarding schools, we bring together students who take advantage of our rich academic program; engage with peers in an exciting, active, and intellectually vibrant community; and take risks by pursuing the myriad opportunities available to them. In a community of students representing 26 states and 20 countries, we offer an optimal environment for vigorous teaching and learning, and the establishment of lifelong friendships, and we instill in our students a commitment to their best selves and the common good. Small classes and low teacher/student ratios are staples of independent school communities, and while such is the case at Loomis, there is so much more that makes our community unique compared to other schools that you might be considering.

I believe that families don’t send their children to “institutions,” but they send them to individual people who are part of a broader community responsible for supporting and nurturing the growth and development of children. Loomis Chaffee is a school with a soul, a school that is unabashedly committed to academic excellence, the formation of skilled and discerning minds, and imbuing in young people the confidence to thrive in any set of circumstances. After all, what good is it for young people to attain an exemplary academic record with enviable standardized test scores if they lack the confidence and judgment to make meaningful contributions to the community in which they live?

Loomis Chaffee is a reflection of the dynamic and pluralistic society in which we live as well as a precursor to the world that our students will encounter upon completion of their time with us. While educating students who will go on to the finest colleges and universities is a priority for any quality school, the core of what we do at Loomis Chaffee is to prepare young people to enter a world that is constantly in flux. Our faculty, combined with our curriculum and student life experience, expose students to the increasingly complex issues that confront humanity. They are prepared to think beyond themselves and to fashion innovative ideas that inspire local, regional, national, and global leadership. As a school steeped in excellence and committed to educating students in a strong liberal arts tradition, this is our promise to you. I hope you come visit and take a look for yourself.

Assistant Head of School for Enrollment
